What is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is an evidence-based therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz. It views the mind as naturally multiple—containing different "parts" that interact like an inner family. Each part has positive intentions, even when their behaviors seem problematic.

"All parts are welcome. Every part has a positive intention. There are no bad parts."
— Core principle of IFS therapy

InnerOS combines IFS principles with Carl Jung's archetypal psychology. Your 10 inner archetypes represent universal patterns—the Protector (Warrior), the Nurturer (Caregiver), the Wise One (Sage)—that exist within everyone.

How InnerOS Uses IFS Principles

We don't replace therapy. We help you practice parts awareness and Self-leadership between sessions—or as a standalone self-exploration tool.

Your 10 Inner Parts

Meet Warrior, Sage, Lover, Caregiver, and 6 more archetypes. Each represents a part of you with its own wisdom and concerns.

Self as Witness

IFS teaches that you have a core Self that can observe and lead all your parts. The Council helps you access that witnessing presence.

Shadow Integration

Some parts carry pain or have been exiled. InnerOS helps you approach shadow material safely, without pathologizing any part of you.

No Diagnosis, Just Dialogue

We don't label you. Your parts aren't problems to fix—they're voices to hear. Understanding replaces judgment.

See Your Council in Action

Bring a question or dilemma to your Inner Council. Multiple archetypes respond with their perspectives.

Example Council Session
Your Topic:"I got a job offer that pays more but I'd have to move away from family"
🛡️ The Warrior

"I want to fight for this opportunity. I've been playing it safe for too long. This is my chance to prove what I'm capable of—and I don't want to look back with regret."

💚 The Caregiver

"But I'm worried about Mom. She's getting older, and I'm the one she calls when something goes wrong. If I leave, who takes care of her? I can't just abandon that."

🎯 The Achiever

"I've worked so hard to get here. This offer validates everything I've been building toward. If I say no, I might never get another chance like this. I need to take it."

The Council continues until you find clarity. You respond, they adapt, and Self emerges as the final decision-maker.

Why People Choose InnerOS for Parts Work

  • Practice between therapy sessions

If you're working with an IFS therapist, InnerOS helps you stay connected to your parts between appointments. Many therapists recommend daily parts check-ins.

  • Accessible self-exploration

IFS therapy can be expensive and hard to find. InnerOS offers an accessible way to explore parts work principles on your own terms, at your own pace.

  • Find clarity in 10 minutes

A typical Council session takes about 10 minutes. Bring any decision, conflict, or question—and leave with multiple perspectives integrated.

  • Your archetypes learn over time

InnerOS remembers your patterns, your history with each archetype, and your growth. Your Council becomes more personalized the more you use it.

IFS Apps: Common Questions

Is there an app for IFS parts work?

Yes. Several apps now support Internal Family Systems parts work, InnerOS among them. InnerOS runs a structured ten-minute written session in which distinct parts of you answer in turn, then closes on one concrete next step. It is a tool for practising parts awareness on your own, not a licensed IFS therapist.

What is the best IFS app?

There is no single best IFS app; it depends on what you want from it. Some are guided audio libraries, some are journals with parts prompts, some are chat companions. InnerOS is built for overthinkers who need to decide something, so it structures the argument already running in your head rather than quieting it.

What is an IFS companion app?

An IFS companion app is something you use between therapy sessions to stay in contact with your parts. It prompts you to notice which part is speaking, what it wants, and what it is trying to protect. InnerOS does this as a written council where each part answers in its own voice.

Can AI do IFS therapy?

No. IFS therapy depends on a trained clinician tracking your responses in the room, and AI cannot do that. What AI can do is hold the writing practice around it: prompting you to name a part, stay curious rather than critical, and record what surfaced. InnerOS uses AI for that structure only.

What is IFS therapy?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a therapeutic model developed by Dr. Richard Schwartz that views the mind as naturally multiple, containing different parts that interact like an inner family. Each part has a positive intention, even when its behaviour seems unhelpful. IFS works by building a compassionate, self-led relationship with those parts.

Is InnerOS a replacement for IFS therapy?

No. InnerOS is a self-exploration tool informed by IFS principles, not a replacement for professional mental health treatment. It can complement therapy by helping you practise parts awareness between sessions, but it is not a substitute for working with a licensed IFS therapist, and it is not for crisis support.

How does InnerOS use IFS principles?

InnerOS pairs IFS with Jungian archetypal psychology. Ten archetypes stand in for recurring parts of your psyche: the Warrior protects, the Caregiver nurtures, the Sage reflects. A council session asks each relevant one what it makes of your current situation, so you hear the disagreement instead of just feeling it.

What are the 10 archetypes in InnerOS?

The ten are Sovereign (authority), Warrior (protection), Sage (wisdom), Lover (connection), Creator (expression), Caregiver (nurturing), Explorer (curiosity), Trickster (disruption), Achiever (drive), and Wounded Healer (transformation). Each names a familiar pattern of human motivation, and every one of them is present in everyone to some degree.

How long does a Council session take?

About ten minutes. You bring a decision or a knot you keep circling, the relevant archetypes respond with their perspectives, and you can keep the dialogue going as long as it stays useful. Sessions end with a concrete next step rather than an open-ended reflection, so you can close the app.

InnerOS is Not Therapy

InnerOS is a self-exploration tool, not a replacement for professional mental health treatment. If you're experiencing a mental health crisis, please contact a licensed therapist or crisis line. InnerOS works best as a complement to therapy, not a substitute for it.
